Welcome to Sailing and Self-Awareness for Women and Their
Shipmates!

Capt. Tricia Birdsell, returned from full-time cruising
since the sale of her Sailing School for Women in 2004, is once again
teaching Sailing and Self-Awareness to Women and Their Shipmates.
The content of all seminars are based on
Sailing in
Balance: A Boat and Sail Handling Manual for Women and Their Shipmates,
written by
Capt. Tricia Birdsell. Originally designed for her
clients at
HERIZENTM Sailing
for Women Inc., the book explains the "whys" of sailing in a way
that is helpful to novices and experienced sailors alike. See
Sailing Book
for Women for details on purchasing a copy.
(NB: Capt. Tricia has
not been associated with HERIZEN Tm Sailing for Women Inc. since the sale of
the business in 2003.)
The format for seminars/classes is as variable as the needs of
women and their shipmates:
 |
Large group seminars on "When Venus and Mars Go
Boating", discussing the difference between male and female realities and
how this manifests on a boat. Many practical tips on how to practice
what you learn to be confident, competent sailors. Much discussion of
situations and needs of participants. The fee for these seminars is
$30/hr, plus $15/hr traveling time, plus expenses and gratuities, if
appropriate. Fee waived for non-profit organizations with the
opportunity to enroll students and sell books.
|
 |
Small group hands-on seminars/classes on your boat or a
chartered vessel.
All seminars start with a short discussion of the difference between male and female
realities. The fee for these seminars/classes is $30/hr, plus $15/hr
traveling time, plus expenses and gratuities, if appropriate. Some typical seminars offered are:
|
 |
Maneuvering under power and docking
|
 |
Rediscovering your running rigging
|
 |
Sail balance and control
|
 |
Reefing
|
 |
Person Overboard
|
 |
Single-handing
|
 |
Engine maintenance
|
 |
Using GPS, DSC and AIS
|
 |
Assessing your boat's running rigging for safety, comfort
and ease is one of Capt. Tricia's specialties. Small changes on
almost every boat can make big differences in how easy and safe your boat is
to sail. Capt. Tricia in particular likes to pay attention to gybe
preventers, reefing systems, friction and chafe reduction and single-handing
systems that makes life easier for crew as well. The fee for these
seminars/classes is $30/hr, plus $15/hr traveling time, plus expenses and
gratuities, if appropriate.
